Live Report - Stoinis' 124* helps LSG breach Fortress Chepauk

By Hemant Brar

Stoinis silences Chepauk

In three games before this, no team had come to Chepauk this season and beaten CSK. No team has come here and chased down 211. LSG did both in the same match, led by a magnificent hundred by Marcus Stoinis.
With 17 required from the final over, Stoinis launched the first one over long-on before drilling the next straight back for four. Luck, too, favoured him as the next one raced to the right of short third. Fizz had overstepped as well, which reduced the equation to two needed from four balls.
On the next, Stoinis moved across and pulled a short ball over backward square leg to seal the deal.
Sampath adds that Stoinis now has the highest individual score in an IPL chase, bettering Paul Valthaty's 120* in 2011, also vs CSK.
The result means LSG are now at No. 4 on the points table, with ten points from eight games. CSK slip to fifth.
That's all from our side for this game. See you soon.

Hooda keeps LSG in hunt

Hooda hit Pathirana for two fours, to go with one from Stoinis to collect 15 from the penultimate over. They need 17 from the last now. Fizz will bowl.

Pathirana gets Pooran before Stoinis ton

Pooran looked to take on Pathirana as well but ended up miscuing it to Shardul Thakur at long-off. Deepak Hooda is the new batter. He said before the match that he was hitting it well. He seems to be walking the talk; he has hit his second ball over deep square leg for a six.
Stoinis, meanwhile, has brought up his hundred, off 56 balls.
LSG need 32 off two overs

The dew effect

The sole reason LSG opted to chase was the dew in the second half. And it seems to be making a difference. A couple of overs ago, Tushar Deshpande bowled a high no-ball.
If there was more evidence needed, a cutter into the pitch from Mustafizur came onto the bat nicely - Stoinis hit it for a straight off the back foot.
Shardul Thakur bowled the 16th over. Pooran and Stoinis knew they had to make it a big one because the remaining four were to be bowled by Mustafizur and Pathirana.
Pooran made sure LSG didn't miss out and hit the first three balls for 6, 4, 6. In all, 20 came from it.

Pathirana ends Padikkal's misery

A length ball at 151.4kph. In the line of leg stump. Padikkal had no answer to it. He backed away but was beaten by pace and had his leg stump uprooted. He departs for 13 off 19.
LSG might not mind that as it brings Nicholas Pooran to the crease.
And while we are at it, do read Andrew Fidel Fernando's excellent essay on why Pathirana in CSK yellow makes for a good omen.

Stoinis keeps LSG in contest

Devdutt Padikkal came in as Impact Player - he has a good record against most CSK bowlers. However, he has struggled for runs this IPL, and it's the same story so far tonight as well. He is on 12 off 16 balls.
Meanwhile, Stoinis has been keeping LSG in the contest almost singlehandedly. He has brought up his fifty off 26 balls, with the help of six fours and two sixes. But it's still an uphill task.
LSG are 83 for 2 after ten. They need 128 from the next ten. Seven of those will be bowled by Pathirana and Mustafizur.

Rahul departs for 16

In the first four games of the season, Rahul scored at a strike rate of 125.49 in the powerplay. But after that, he smashed it at 185.11 in this phase - something he has always been capable of.
He was looking dangerous once again. After an early wicket, he and Marcus Stoinis kept LSG's chase on track but Mustafizur Rahman has pegged them back. Having hit a four earlier in the over, he went for another big hit but failed to clear Gaikwad at extra cover.

Chahar castles de Kock

In a pre-match interview with the broadcaster, Deepak Chahar complained about the quality of the balls. He said they only get six balls to pick from and sometimes it seems none of them would swing. He said at least give us a full box of 12 to pick from.
But so far tonight, he has been able to move the ball in both directions. As a reward, he got Quinton de Kock's wicket. The batter went for a cut only to chop it back onto his stumps.

CSK finish on 210 for 4

Dube started the final over with a six off Stoinis but was run out for 66 off 27 with two balls left in the innings. That brought MS Dhoni in the middle. Gaikwad took a single on the penultimate ball and Dhoni, as he has done throughout this season, finished off in style. He moved towards the off side to a full delivery and muscled it over midwicket for four.
CSK finish on 210 for 4. The pitch looked slightly two-paced at times but is this a dew-proof total?

Hundred for Gaikwad, fifty for Dube

This has been an excellent innings from Gaikwad - his sixth hundred in T20 cricket. It comes off 56 balls, during a sequence of 6, 4, 4 against Yash Thakur. The whole dugout stands up to applaud the landmark.
Sampath Bandarupalli tells me that Gaikwad, at 27 years and 83 days, is the second-youngest captain to score a hundred in the IPL after Sanju Samson.
If Gaikwad has been sublime, Dube has been destructive. In the 19th over, he hits two fours and a six against Mohsin and brings up his fifty off just 22 balls.

Dube on the go

Dube is CSK's designated spin-hitter. And with both LSG spinners - Bishnoi and Krunal - spinning the ball into him, Rahul doesn't want to risk bowling them. In fact, no captain has been that brave this season.
But it has made little difference. After hitting Marcus Stoinis for a sixes and a four across the allrounder's two overs, he has latched onto Yash Thakur, hitting him for three successive sixes in the 16th over.
Dube has moved to 37 off just 15 balls, and CSK 154/3 after 16. ESPNcricinfo's Forecaster is predicting 208 for them.

Dube hits first six of the innings

It took 12.5 overs but finally we have the first six of the night. It came from Shivam Dube's bat. Mohsin bowled one slightly full around off and Dube launched him down the ground for a maximum.
If you are wondering what's the latest in an innings we have had a six this season, then it was 16.2 for Gujarat Titans when they were bowled out for 89 against Delhi Capitals.

Mohsin sends Jadeja back

It was a slower ball, bowled into the surface. It angled across Jadeja, who went for the pull but only got a glove on it. This time, it was the easiest of catches for Rahul.
Gaikwad, meanwhile, has motored to 71 off just 39. The other batters have managed only 30 off 33.

Gaikwad's powerplay

37 Runs scored by Gaikwad in the powerplay today. Only twice he has scored more in this phase in T20s. Coincidentally, his best in the powerplay, 46, was also against LSG and at Chepauk.

Hooda takes a stunner

It has been a mixed bag in the field for LSG so far. While Rahul took an excellent catch and Pooran put in a good chase to save a run, Thakur dropped Mitchell at short third and Henry failed to grab a much difficult chance at the same position. Apart from this, there was a misfield at extra cover.
And just now Hooda has taken a superb catch. It was short of length from Thakur and Mitchell went for the pull. He struck it alight but couldn't get the desired elevation. Hooda showed great reflexes at short midwicket and took it overhead, slightly to his left.
Ravindra Jadeja is the new batter and Thakur bowls four straight dots to him to end the powerplay.

Gaikwad on the attack

The LSG bowlers are offering width to Gaikwad and he is loving it. In the fourth over, Ravi Bishnoi made that mistake a couple of times and Gaikwad hit him for two boundaries.
From the other end, Henry bowled one full outside off, only for Gaikwad to drive him through covers. Two balls later, he shorted his length but Gaikwad played a late cut to pick up another boundary. He has moved to 36 off just 18 balls.

Henry strikes in opening over

... thanks to a stunning, one-handed catch by KL Rahul.
Henry's first five balls were either on good length or just short of it. For the last ball, Henry went full and just outside off. Rahane couldn't resist the temptation to drive at it. But all he managed was an outside edge. It went to the right Rahul - the first slip was a touch wide - and he dived full length and pouched it.
CSK 4/1 after one
PS: In the next over, Mohsin Khan could have had Daryl Mitchell but Yash Thakur dropped a straightforward chance at short third. Gaikwad adds insult to injury by hitting the next two balls for four.

Unchanged LSG bowl; CSK bring in Mitchell for Ravindra

LSG have won the toss and opted to bowl. "The only reason I can come up with is there is a bit of dew," LSG captain KL Rahul says. "We trained here yesterday and having played here before as well, dew plays a role in the second innings."
Ian Bishop asked Rahul how they plan to make the crowd quiet. "I don't think they are going to get quiet," Rahul says. LSG are unchanged.
"Something to work on for me - the coin toss," CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad says. "I have lost it now seven times." CSK have made one change: Daryl Mitchell comes in for Rachin Ravindra. Gaikwad confirms he will open the innings.
Chennai Super Kings: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Daryl Mitchell, 4 Shivam Dube, 5 Moeen Ali, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (wk), 8 Deepak Chahar, 9 Tushar Deshpande, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Matheesha Pathirana
Impact Players: Sameer Rizvi, Shardul Thakur, Shaik Rasheed, Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra

A pitch of two halves

One end has got more even covering of the grass than the other. So will we see, predominantly, spinners operating from one end and seamers from the other?
Matthew Hayden predicts there will be dew. So does that mean the captain winning the toss will be looking to bowl first?
The square boundaries are 66 and 67 metres. The straight boundary is 78 metres.

Latest from the venue

Deivarayan Muthu: Matt Henry is marking his run-up, with his New Zealand and Canterbury team-mate Daryl Mitchell assisting him. Can't spot Shamar Joseph or Naveen-ul-Haq yet. M Siddharth, the local boy, was first to arrive for training this evening and even had a long stint at the nets on Monday evening. He was a net bowler for CSK last season. Will he get a chance to go up against CSK today?
Devon Conway, who had been sidelined from the IPL with a thumb injury, has linked up with the CSK side in Chennai. He hit the nets yesterday and will complete his rehab in Chennai under Tommy Simsek, who is also the New Zealand physio. CSK's new recruit Richard Gleeson, though, is yet to join the squad.

CSK begin crucial run of home games

CSK like to keep things simple, and one of those things is: win five out of seven home games and three or four away ones and you are through to the playoffs.
So far in IPL 2024, they have checked the first box, with three wins from as many home games but the away matches have been an issue. There they have just one win from four games, which means they need to do even better at home to strengthen their playoff chances.
For that reason, their next three games - all at Chepauk - become crucial. Tonight, they are up against Lucknow Super Giants, who are used to playing on slow, spinning surfaces. Can CSK overcome this challenge? We will find out soon.
